A Florida man bitten more than 100 times by stray dogs has died, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The body of Melvin Olds Jr., 45, was discovered in a wooded area near Lake Placid on the Fourth of July, deputies said. Investigators pegged an animal attack as a preliminary cause of death, but a final determination won’t be reached until after toxicology reports.

No other wounds besides dog bites were found on Olds’ body, deputies said.

Six dogs possibly involved in the attack have been captured, Sheriff Paul Blackman said.

“While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Blackman said. “I want to encourage residents of Highway Park [a neighborhood south of Lake Placid] and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive.”

Olds was a father of five, and he also was a grandfather.
