See Orionid Meteor Shower Over Washington This Weekend

The 2018 Orionid meteor shower will peak this weekend. Skies will be clear, although the moon will be bright.

WOODINVILLE, WA - The 2018 Orionid meteor shower will peak on Sunday, but you'll be able to see the show all weekend. Skies around Puget Sound are forecast to be clear overnight, although moonlight may make the shower slightly harder to see.

According to NASA meteor experts, up to 15 meteors per hour will be visible, with the highest concentration early Sunday morning.

The meteors are remnants of Halley's Comet. As the comet streaks through space and around our sun, it leaves behind small pieces that turn into meteors. Earth is entering that trail of debris right about now.

For optimal viewing, move away from bright urban areas. Here's what NASA recommends for viewing:

"Find an area well away from city or street lights. Come prepared with a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair. Lie flat on your back with your feet facing southeast if you are in the Northern Hemisphere or northeast if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Be patient -- the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse."

The Orionid shower will be visible through Oct. 29, although will be harder to see after this weekend.
