Police: Twin fetus found at treatment plant not at viable stage of development

Twin fetuses found at a San Diego wastewater treatment plant this week were not at a viable stage of development, so there won’t be a criminal investigation into the matter, a police homicide lieutenant said Friday.

Lt. Matt Dobbs did not say how far along in development the male fetuses were. Even though the investigation has been called off, he said investigators remain concerned that the twins’ mother may need medical attention.

“This is obviously a very difficult time and the investigators hope these developments will give the mother the confidence to seek whatever medical or emotional assistance she may need,” Dobbs said in a news release.

The human fetuses were discovered Thursday at a treatment plant on Harbor Drive, and homicide detectives were called in to investigate.

Dobbs said investigators were concerned about the welfare of the mother, whether she might have had some sort of medical distress during delivery, and whether she may still need help.
