The Rome Police Department has a new member.

Their newest member, Spock, joins the city’s K9 Unit as a part of an $80,000 state grant to fight crime.

Spock will be used to help detect drugs, search buildings, track suspects, and crowd control. Spock brings the K9 unit back to full staff after a recent retirement.

“We have two K9’s on our force and they are very important to our drug investigations, and sometimes with arson, so many of the things that we’re doing the dog is extremely important,” said mayor Jacqueline Izzo.
