ELIZABETH, Ill. — Grace Sarah Hancock, 101, of Elizabeth, Ill., died on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at the Lena (Ill.) Living Centers. A funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Reverend Kyungsu Park officiating. Burial will take place in the Elizabeth Cemetery. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Grace's memory. Grace was born on Aug. 4, 1913, the daughter of Samuel and Ella (Welch) Nicholls in Galena, Ill. Grace married Cletus Hancock on Dec. 31, 1930, in Galena. Cletus died on March 29, 1985, in Savanna.
Grace and her husband, Cletus, farmed near Elizabeth for many years. Grace also worked for Eaton Manufacturing in Hanover for more than 10 years. Grace attended the United Methodist Church, Elizabeth, where she enjoyed helping with the annual turkey supper. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens. She also cherished playing cards and spending time with her family and friends.
Grace will be dearly missed by two daughters, Evelyn (William) Hermann of Lena and Joan Mayes of Bettendorf; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Hanson of Minneapolis and Bernetta Curtis of Savanna. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus; two brothers, Sam and Tom Nicholls; two sisters, Florence Glasgow and Irene Rosenthal; and one son-in-law, Perry Mayes.
