Wilmington Fire: Police Officer Saves Family, 4 Pets

A Wilmington fire broke out on Nichols Street at 1 a.m. as a family was asleep; a police officer got them and four pets out safe.

WILMINGTON, MA — A Wilmington police officer saved a family and four pets from a fire on Nichols Street Saturday morning. The blaze broke out at about 1 a.m. as the family of two was asleep, police said. A resident called 911 and Officer Kevin Skinner arrived at the scene within minutes.

"The back porch was on fire and ... quickly spreading," Wilmington police said in a statement.

Skinner awoke the residents and they gathered the family pets — two dogs and two birds — and escaped unharmed.

Wilmington, Tewksbury and Billerica firefighters extinguished the flames. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Police praised Skinner and firefighters for a "job well done."
