Yeovil Town have lodged a formal appeal in a bid to rescind the red card which is set to rule winger Otis Khan out of the FA Cup fourth round tie against his boyhood club, Manchester United.

Khan was dismissed in the 94th minute of Saturday's League Two 2-1 defeat against Chesterfield, barging the referee while disputing the winning goal in stoppage time.

The 22-year-old claimed the contact was accidental because he tripped as he ran towards referee Kevin Johnson to protest because he thought he was fouled in the build-up to the goal.

The League Two club have lodged a formal appeal to have the red card rescinded so Khan can face his boyhood club Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round

Khan, who was born in Ashton-under-Lyne and played for United's schoolboy teams until he released at the age of 16 and arrived at Yeovil via Sheffield United and Barnsley, issued an apology on social media.

'Mr Johnson I am deeply sorry for falling into you,' said Khan. 'In all my time playing football I have always had to utmost respect for referees and officials.

'I hope this incident can be analysed again so you can clearly see it wasn't intentional. I am absolutely heartbroken because my dreams of playing against my boyhood club are in doubt.'

Yeovil have made a formal appeal to the Football Association.

Khan has scored 10 goals this season and is a transfer target this month for several League One clubs, including Bristol Rovers and Wigan.
