Men’s Golf Selected For NCAA Bryan Regional

May 4

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – The American Athletic Conference Champion SMU men's golf team was selected to the NCAA Bryan Regional as the eight seed, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Texas A&M's Tradition's Club May 16-18.

The Mustangs' selection was earned by merit of an automatic bid the Mustangs collected in their win at the AAC Championship on Apr. 24.

SMU's regional berth marks the Mustangs' 26th appearance in the NCAA Regionals since the format began in 1989 and the program's 37th overall appearance in the NCAA postseason.

In the 2021 regional, SMU finished third in the 13-team field at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma. on May 18, with senior Noah Goodwin winning the individual title by six strokes to advance the Mustangs to the championship. Goodwin, who finished at -15, became the third SMU player to finish first or tie for first at an NCAA Regional since the format began in 1989.

The top five teams after 54 holes at each of the six regional sites, plus the top individual not on an advancing team, advance to the NCAA Golf Championships, held May 27-June 1 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Mustangs have advanced out of regional play in their last four appearances, in 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2021.

The last time SMU won the AAC title (2013-14), the Mustangs closed regionals in fourth place, and advanced to the eight-team playoff in the NCAA Championship, ultimately falling 3-2 to Alabama in the quarterfinal round of match play and securing its best national finish since 1972.
