Early this morning a partial solar eclipse took place over the southern hemisphere.

This is the first time the solar event has happened on Friday 13th - traditionally a day of bad omens - for 44 years.

The next time a solar eclipse happens on Friday 13th will be in 2080.

Naturally, the more superstitious corners of the internet have proclaimed that the two events have dire consequences for humanity.

Paul Begley, a US-based evangelist and pastor, has claimed that "demonic forces" will be at play today. He also took note of the forthcoming Blood Moon lunar eclipse.

“As I was telling you guys a week or so ago, this Blood Moon that’s approaching on July 27 – before it gets here you have a partial solar eclipse which will be over Tasmania," the conspiracy theorist said.

“You’ve heard of the Tasmanian Devil, well demonic forces will be at play because this is a Friday the 13th partial solar eclipse.”

Despite the presence of a solar eclipse this morning, very few people even got a chance to see it.

It passed over the South Pacific and the India Ocean giving only those on the southern coast of Australia and a few parts of New Zealand a chance to witness it.

The eclipse peaked over the icy land of Antarctica in the early hours of this morning.

Solar eclipses happen on average 2.4 times a year.

A total solar eclipse

Fred Espenak, an American astrophysicist and world-leading scientist on eclipses, explains that the rare phenomenon can be accurately predicted.

He said: "Certainly within 100 to 200 years we can predict when an eclipse will occur to within a second, but the pattern of occurrence is a complicated one.

"They don't repeat on a time schedule like the seasons of the year".

However, Mr. Begley is well known for making outlandish predictions based on astronomical events. He has previously claimed the July 27 Blood Moon is a sign the world is going to end .

Suffice to say, it won't.
