Laurel Elizabeth Gabel

Laurel Elizabeth (Renz) Gabel age 62 of Fargo, ND, passed on May 19th 2018 at Eventide Rehabilitation home in Fargo, ND. Laurel was born in Eureka, SD on November 18th, 1955 to Johnny and Ida Renz. She grew up on a farm near Artas, SD. She also lived in Mound City and Herreid, SD. She graduated from Herreid High School in 1974, and married Ray Gabel the same year. She lived in Herreid, Dodge, Fargo, Halliday, Hazen, and finally Fargo. She met numerous friends that she treasured along the way. She worked as a waitress from the age of 13 until she married Ray. They then bought the restaurant where they met and called it the R&L Cafe. She was a stay at home mom, where she kept 5 kids happy and well-fed by gardening and canning. Ray and Laurel ran Gabel's Pizza in Halliday from 1990-95. In Hazen, she worked at Hardware Hank. In Fargo, she worked at Hornbacher's and JC Penney's. She retired a few years ago to enjoy her many grandchildren. She grew up in the Reformed Church. She was a member of Red River Reformed Church. The great joys of her life was her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren and the many children that she taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She lived to rummage sale and tend to her flower gardens. She spent many years on a bowling league. She is survived by her husband, Ray, her children Jon, Hope (Merrilee), Jessica (Erick), Sarah (Kevin), Andy (Julia), EJ (Marisa) and numerous grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Renz, and her great grandson Hayden. Celebration of life will be on Tuesday, May 22nd at Red River Reformed Church, 607 9th ST E West Fargo, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her name to Red River Church.
