BUKIT MERTAJAM: A five-year old boy's body was found by the police in an oil palm estate in Permatang Tinggi here today.
The body was found six days after the boy's mother lodged a missing child police report.
CID chief SAC Mazlam Kesah said the breakthrough came after the mother confessed to accidentally killing the victim while under police questioning.
He said the mother and boyfriend had been detained yesterday for questioning to facilitate investigations.
"The case has been reclassified as murder," he said in a brief text statement to the media when contacted.
The decomposed body was discovered after police took the two suspects to the plantation to assist in the search early this morning.
It is learned the 30-year-old mother is from Kulim, Kedah, while the male suspect is 25 years old.
Sources said the mother and her boyfriend decided to dispose the body in an oil palm plantation following the death.
The body had been sent to the Seberang Jaya hospital for a post mortem to determine the cause of death.
