Navigating Cumberland and other Cape Fear region counties is going to be difficult with major roads closed due to flooding and, in some cases, complete washouts, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The DOT announced Tuesday that Interstate 95 in Cumberland County, between mile markers 46 and 56, including a segment over the Cape Fear River would be closed, essentially closing the highway from the South Carolina line to Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

Workers were monitoring the Grove Street bridge over the river in Fayetteville late Tuesday, saying if the water reached the girders, it would be closed, according to a DOT release.

Meanwhile the Person Street bridge in Fayetteville was closed, shutting down the Person Street/Clinton Road intersection at Cedar Creek Road.

Division 6, which includes Cumberland, Bladen, Harnett Robeson, Bladen and Columbus counties, "sustained some of the worst damage in North Carolina," the release said.

More than 200 secondary roads in the five counties have washed out or closed, according to the release, and the number continues to rise.

Elsewhere in Cumberland County, road closures include U.S. 13 near Wade, U.S. 301, N.C. 59 in Hope Mills and N.C. 87, the release said.

The flooding of the Little River in Spring Lake has closed N.C. 210 between Pine Knoll Drive and East Manchester Road and N.C. 690 (Vass Road).

Harnett County major roads that are closed include U.S. 401 south of Lillington, N.C. 27, N.C. 82, N.C. 210 near Spring Lake and N.C. 217 in the Linden area.

N.C. 210 is closed from I-95 in Cumberland County to Interstate 40 in Pender County, shutting down the length of the highway that goes through Bladen County.

Other road closings in Bladen County include N.C. 53, U.S. 701, N.C. 131, N.C. 210,  and N.C. 211.

Robeson County road closings include U.S. 74, U.S. 301, U.S. 501, N.C. 41, N.C. 72 and N.C. 130.

In Sampson County, N.C. 242, near Dunn Road, north of Roseboro is closed, as is N.C. 24, west of Turkey, at Moltinville and Rowan roads.

Maxwell Road is closed from north of Autryville to Cumberland County, and U.S. 13 is closed from Page Road to Cumberland County. U.S. 13 near Newton Grove is closed between Wrye Branch to Blackman roads.
