HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN COUNTY (WBRE-WYOU-TV) Earlier this year a number of hearings were held at the state capitol on ways to improve gun safety in Pennsylvania.

There are only a couple weeks left before lawmakers leave for the summer.

And as Eyewitness News State Capitol Reporter Matt Heckel tells us — that’s creating a last-minute push to turn those ideas into laws.

“There have been Pennsylvanians that have actually died because of the loophole that this bill closes. We’re hoping it passes as soon as possible.” Marybeth Christiansen was one of 20 members of the group “Moms Demand Action” at the State Capitol Monday, meeting with members of the house judiciary committee urging them to pass House Bill 2060.

“And we’re hoping to get a vote on it tomorrow and swift passage by the full house.” Said Christiansen.

The bi-partisan bill would give those found guilty of domestic abuse 48 hours to give up all firearms in their possession. It’s similar to a bill that unanimously passed the Senate in March and one of several potential laws discussed in a series of hearings by the house judiciary committee earlier this spring now being considered.

“Along with a package of other great gun safety bills. Background check bill. Red flag bill….” said Christiansen.

And with just two weeks to go before lawmakers go home for the summer Moms Demand Action is making a last-minute push for House Bill 2060, giving committee members a list of 78 reasons they should pass the bill.

Representing the 78 Pennsylvanians murdered by guns in domestic violence situations last year.

“It really speaks volumes for how invasive and pervasive domestic violence is. It affects everyone. It can happen anywhere, it does happen everywhere.” Said Christiansen

The house judiciary committee will vote on that bill tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
