Man beaten up, robbed on Walnut Street, Bridgeton police say

BRIDGETON – A man was beaten and robbed while walking along Walnut Street Thursday night, police said.

The victim reported to police that while walking in the 100 block of Walnut Street around 8:27 p.m., he was approached by a group of about 4 to 5 male teenagers, between the ages of 15 and 17.

After passing the group, the victim told police, someone grabbed him and held him while others began repeatedly striking him in his face.

During the assault, police said, someone stole the victim's cellphone, ID card and cash.

The victim refused medical treatment, police said.

He reported last seeing the group of teens fleeing south on Walnut Street and then east on Elmer Street.

The teens were described as black males mostly wearing dark-colored clothing, except for one, who was wearing a yellow shirt.

Other arrests reported by Bridgeton Police:

-- James E. Thomas, 59, of Vine Street, was arrested Oct. 23 for simple assault following a domestic violence incident. He was held in the Cumberland County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.

-- Thomas Jones, 37, of East Oak Street, Millville, was arrested Oct. 23 for failure to appear and on three child support warrants. He was held in the Cumberland County Jail in lieu of $56,751 bail.

-- James D. Johnson, 22, of Harrison Street, was charged Oct. 23 with simple assault following a domestic violence incident. He was later released.

-- Joseph McCullough, 39, of Bridgeton Villas, was arrested Oct. 23 on five child support warrants. He was held in the Cumberland County Jail in lieu of $23,004 bail.

-- Richard A. Logan, 25, of Harrison Street, was charged Oct. 24 with disorderly conduct. He was later released.

-- Police responded to a residential burglary Oct. 23 on Smith Avenue. The incident is believed to have occurred between Aug. 2 and Sept. 27, police said. The owner of the vacant home reported that someone entered the property and stole copper pipe. The theft and damage were estimated at $1,500.
