How Joel Kinnaman kept his cool as 'RoboCop'

Joel Kinnaman wore an air-conditioned vest under his cyborg-cop suit for "RoboCop."

"It's pretty hot."

Actor Joel Kinnaman's reaction to wearing his futuristic suit in RoboCop turned out to be an understatement. But at least he looked cool as a cyborg Detroit police officer fighting the good fight after he's critically injured in the movie, a remake of the 1987 sci-fi film out on Blu-ray and DVD Tuesday.

The new movie directed by Jose Padilha, Kinnaman's Alex Murphy gets rebooted and put into the line of fire against enemies both human and robotic. And during the making of the film, Kinnaman simply felt on fire due to the heavy suits he had to wear as RoboCop.

A behind-the-scenes feature on the Blu-ray and DVD shows exactly how Kinnaman kept his cool over long days filming scenes as RoboCop: He wore a suit pretty much the entire shoot under the armor that had a vest with a series of sewn-in hoses where filmmakers pumped in icy water.

There was one day on set, though, while filming a scene with Kinnaman where Michael Keaton (who plays corporate bad guy Raymond Sellars) debated which actor had it worse: Kinnaman in the RoboCop suit or Keaton in the rubber outfit from 1989's Batman movie.

"I mean, Batman's suit was so cool. It just was. It was ridiculous and tremendous at the same time," Keaton says. "His is kinda like that but I used to tell Joe what a big baby he was all the time: This is nothing. He has little air-conditioning units in there.' "

Other Blu-ray/DVD extras include a look at RoboCop's weapons, an OmniCorp product announcement and deleted scenes.
