Confectioners Claim State Fair Chocolate Sculpture Honors

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2018) (readMedia)-- Iowa State Fair landmarks were recreated out of chocolate by participants in the Beaverdale Confections Chocolate and Candy Sculpture competition judged Tuesday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Julie Petersen of Knoxville won first place and a $50 cash award in the Adult class.

Virginia Sheeder of Linden won first place and a $50 cash award in the Youth class of competition. Isabelle Keylon of Clive earned second place and $25. Elizabeth Keylon of Clive claimed third place and $20.

Entries were judged on artistic flair, fair theme, visual display and ingredients.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
