EMPAC announces fall lineup

Danced mixed with poetry, jazz mashed with heavy metal and electronic music paired with light are among the live performances set for this fall at EMPAC, the experimental performing-arts center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The autumn schedule opens Wednesday, Sept. 2, with a book launch and runs through Friday, Dec. 11. Unless otherwise noted, tickets are $18, with discounts for faculty/staff, seniors and students.

5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2: “Programming EMPAC: The First 4,158 Days,” launch of 688-page book devoted to all EMPAC programming so far. Mezzanine. Free.

8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10: Ant Hampton’s “The Extra People,” an interactive theater piece developed at EMPAC that “relies on sonic instructions delivered to the audience-turned-actors through headphones.” Theater.

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: “dotQuantum,” a piece by media-art collective Flatform that brings light and moving images to the perception of landscape. Studio One.

7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24: “WITHIN 2,” performance/workshop with Lebanese electronic composer Tarek Atoui. Studio 1 – Goodman. Free.

7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1: “In Conversation: Film Memory,” a discussion with filmmaker Jennifer West and writer/curator Michael Ned Holte. Studio 2. Free.

9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2: “vhvl + Daedelus + Ikonika,” electro-dance night with three global beatmakers. Studio 1 – Goodman.

8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8 and 9: “Recursive Frame Analysis,” British musician-artist Mark Fell’s strobing, mixed-genre performance with choreography, light and sound. Theater.

8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15: Multi-channel music played through intricately arranged loudspeakers by France Jobin, Canadian composer of electronic “sound sculpture.” Concert Hall.

8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16: Stage show featuring electronic experimental music from Oneohtrix Point Never. Venue to be announced.

8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30: “Mount Rushmore,” Elizabeth Orr’s work-in-progress (both film and performance) that tells of a park ranger swamped with political emails. Studio 1 – Goodman.

8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12: Performance by electronic musician Tim Hecker. Studio One – Goodman.

8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13: “THINGING: Dance and Translation and the Work of Anne Carson,” performance by dancer-choreographer Silas Riener and poet Anne Carson. Studio 2.

7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3: Performance by jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson and death-metal bassist Colin Marston. Studio 2.

8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, performance by avant-garde electro-composer Holly Herndon. Studio 1 – Goodman.
