Hunter named Legend of the Game

Long time Caribou Athletic Director Dwight Hunter will be honored on Sunday at the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Hunter will be honored as one of the Legends of the game.

Hunter:" Of course it is a great honor and especially I really am happy because I will be in there with my brother who was kind of my mentor."

Dwight's Brother Gene was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Hunter spent over 40 years as Athletic Director at Caribou High School retiring in 2002.

Hunter:" They supported us 100 percent and they still do today. There are a number of communities around the State that support sports and Presque Isle and Caribou were two of the best."

Hunter graduated from Presque Isle went to UMPI for two years before graduating from the University of Maine. After a stint in the military he ended up at Caribou High School where he stayed for over 40 years.

Hunter:" I had a career that was a labor of love. My family grew up here and it really made things very nice for me."

Hunter was an outstanding High School basketball player for Presque Isle

Hunter:" When I was at Presque Isle we played all over the State. We used to play down at Deering played Bath and Wilton Academy and against Milo and Guilford and Greenville. Coach Hanscomb always had a good schedule for us."

Hunter has received many awards over the years and is always humbled when he is recognized. He said that Sunday will be another very special Day with most of his family there with him.

Hunter:" I will feel proud and will be a little bit nervous. It will be an enjoyable experience. It is a little stressful because you have to make a little talk and you got 500 or 600 people there. It does make it a little stressful, but stress adds to it."
