Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder opens up about THOSE Fifty Shades casting rumours as he works smouldering gaze for Mr Porter

For many fans of the racy Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, there would be no better actor than Ian Somerhalder to take the lead in a movie adaptation.

But the Vampire Diaries star has refused to confirm or deny the rumours, dismissing them in a new interview as 'just talk'.

He told Mr Porter.com that 'there's nothing official', adding in jest that in preparation for call he has been investigating websites that will 'outfit your basement as a dungeon'.

'I thought I'd get prepared, just in case,' he quipped. 'I think a lot of people are doing that right now!'

Mr Somerhalder, 33, scored his breakthrough role in 2004 as Boone Carlyle in the TV drama Lost.

But as one of the first people to be hired, he was also the first to be cut, after just one year.

'It was brutal.Not only are you losing this amazing job, but you're losing this family on set,' he explains.

However thanks to the hit TV series, The Vampire Diaries, which premiered in 2009, Mr Somerhalder's celebrity status has skyrocketed.

The actor, who is currently dating his co-star Nina Dobrev, was talking to Mr Porter.com for a new edition of its newsletter.

He also models a series of understated looks for the online menswear retailer, from must-have labels including J Crew, Acne and Alexander Wang.

Of course, modelling is nothing new to Mr Somerhalder, who started his career in front of the camera as a child in Covington near New Orleans, Louisiana.

On his 16th birthday the photographer Steven Meisel came across a Polaroid of him, and decided to put him in a 12-page spread in L'Uomo Vogue.

And within a year he had been snapped up by photographers such as Bruce Weber and was living between Milan, Paris and New York.

He adds: 'Yeah, it was nuts. The mid-1990s were like this total Dionysian, promiscuous time in the fashion business. An amazing time to be young and not have any responsibility.'

However he found the fashion industry unfulfilling and turned to acting instead, with his mother using 'every dollar we had to put me into acting classes.'

He says he worked hard to hide his southern accent because 'people are extraordinarily judgmental'.

The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries kicked off last week.
