Archaeology Dig At Thomas Edison's Home In Menlo Park

EDISON, NJ — The Middlesex County Office of Arts and History invites you to take part in an active archaeology dig at the site of Thomas Edison’s home in Menlo Park. This free event is scheduled for Sept. 23 and 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park located at 37 Christie St. in Edison.

Join us for an archaeological dig in an attempt to locate the foundations of Edison’s home and any associated artifacts. This open house archaeology project will be conducted by the Middlesex County Office of Arts and History in conjunction with the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey.

Thomas Edison’s revolutionary inventions at his Menlo Park Laboratory in modern-day Edison Township changed the world and earned him the nickname the “Wizard of Menlo Park.” He applied for over 400 patents during his time there and developed some of the most profound technological innovations including the phonograph and the light bulb. That's his Menlo Park home, pictured, when it was still standing.

The site of Edison’s laboratory and the commemorative tower erected over the location bring attention to the spot where Edison created these inventions. But just down the road, and within walking distance of his laboratory, lies the location of Edison’s home.

“I’m excited about this event, as I am sure many history buffs will be,” said Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, Chair of the County’s Business Development and Education Committee. “Thomas Edison’s inventions changed the world as we know it, and it will be exciting to see if any artifacts are left from his time here.”

The Thomas Edison Center will be open both days, and there will be children’s activities, food trucks and a Thomas Edison historical interpreter. A shuttle will provide transportation from the Center to the dig site. Please note that the dig site is not handicap accessible.

“Anything we uncover will add to the already rich history of Thomas Edison in Middlesex County,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “Following the dig, any artifacts uncovered will be displayed at the County’s East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway.”
