Raleigh, N.C. — N.C. State two-sport star Russell Wilson has lost his father. Harrison Wilson died Wednesday night after a long illness.
School spokesperson Annabelle Myers announced the news in an e-mail on Thursday morning. There were no further details.
Wilson, a baseball player and an All-ACC quarterback, was drafted in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. It has been reported that Wilson is planning to sign with the team and play minor-league baseball this summer before returning to school in early August to play football. The redshirt junior has been N.C. State's starting quarterback for the past two seasons.
Wilson’s father, Harrison Wilson III was a two-sport athlete himself. A football and baseball standout at Dartmouth, Wilson III earned a free-agent tryout with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers as a wide receiver.
Wilson III suffered a severe stroke in the fall of 2008 when Russell Wilson began competing for the quarterback spot for N.C. State during preseason camp. Since the stroke, Wilson III spent most of his time in a hospital in Richmond, VA traveling to see Wilson play as he could.
