A North Carolina middle school suspended a student after he drew a picture of a stick figure with a gun, according to a Tuesday report.
Roseboro Salemburg Middle School suspended an unnamed 13-year-old student for two days after the student drew a picture of a stick figure with a gun, reported ABC 7.
“Due to everything happening in the nation, we’re just being extra vigilant about all issues of safety,” Sampson County Schools Superintendent Eric Bracy said.
The father of the student, James Herring, disagreed with the sanction.
“I see [my son] holding his gun,” Herring said. “He’s a deer hunter. I see him with a magician, and I see him as a ninja turtle. Just expressing himself. Nothing violent.”
“When I see [the picture], I see a normal 13-year-old boy. I drew pictures like this. It’s nothing to get expelled from school from,” he added.
The district’s student handbook details punishment for a variety of transgressions, the superintendent noted.
“There are some things that list possible threats or things like that,” Bracy explained. “We’ve got category one, two, three and four, which sort of grades potential incidents and the level of seriousness.”
Indeed, Sampson County Schools’ handbook separates conduct violations into five different classes, sorted by severity. It is unclear which violation Herring’s son committed.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Sampson County Schools for comment but received none in time for press.
