In celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, Inland Master Chorale will begin its 39th season with a concert featuring Bernstein’s music.

Performances are 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at First United Methodist Church, 1 E. Olive Ave., Redlands.

Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” will feature boy soloist Jaxson Glowacki of the National Children’s Chorus plus a quartet of Inland Master Chorale members. The three-movement work is accompanied by organ, harp and percussion.

Selections from “West Side Story” will include “Tonight,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.”

A pre-concert talk by Bernstein scholar Katherine Baber will begin 15 minutes before each performance. Baber is associate professor of music history at the University of Redlands School of Music. Her work focuses on the career of Leonard Bernstein and the ways he shaped the definition of American music, in the United States and abroad.

The concerts will also feature Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia” and “Frostiana.” The latter is a musical setting of seven Robert Frost poems, including The Road Not Taken,” “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and “Choose Something Like a Star.”

Joseph Modica, assistant dean of the University of Redlands School of Music and associate professor of music at the University of Redlands, directs the chorale. Assistant director is Anna DeLeon, who is also director of choirs at Grand Terrace High School. Accompanist is Sophie Tait.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $10 for students and children. Children younger than 5 are not admitted. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at www.inlandmasterchorale.org or by phone at 909-798-4462.
