Power Plant's Discharge Into Lake To Be Considered In Avon Lake

The plant's discharge permit is up for renewal. The public can comment on the 389 million gallons of discharge the plant produces daily.

AVON LAKE, OH — The Avon Lake Power Plant's discharge permit is up for consideration. That means residents will have a chance to comment on a permit that allows the company to discharge approximately 389 million gallons of wastewater per day to Lake Erie. Most of the discharge is once-through condenser cooling water, according to Ohio EPA.

During the renewal process, the company also has to discuss fish that may be impacted by the cooling water intake system. The Avon Lake Power Plant will have to submit a report to Ohio EPA and propose methods to reduce the environmental impact of the system. The cooling water intake pumps about 427 million gallons of water a day from Lake Erie.

The public meeting will be held April 25 at the Avon Lake Public Library in the Waugaman Gallery. The library is located at 32649 Electric Boulevard.
