RIVERSIDE >> Foothill’s boys swimming team had two major feats to celebrate Saturday and the Knights and coaching legend Tom DeLong made the most of their opportunity.
Andrew Koustik of Calvary Chapel got a second chance to celebrate and let loose at Riverside City College.
Foothill defended its title at the CIF-SS Division 2 championships, becoming the first group from the school to claim section swimming and water polo titles in the same school year.
Coach Jim Brumm guided the rare double but Foothill’s celebration included fellow veteran coaches DeLong, 80, and Dave Simcox. After the team jumped into the pool with the title plaque, DeLong led the cheer, “Who are we? Foothill!”
“We’re super proud,” said Foothill senior Zane Scott, who captured the 50- (20.96 seconds) and 100- (45.36) yard freestyles one year after touching second in both events.
“This year, we started swimming really early. We swam for months and it’s really nice for it to pay off at the end.”
The victory was especially sweet for the USC-bound Scott and fellow seniors Samuel Harrison, Ryan Griswold and J.T. Miller. All four swam and started in water polo.
Juniors Hunter Ingram and Chris Mykkanen teamed with Griswold and Scott to claim the 400 free relay in 3:04.37, capping the Knights score at 249 points. Foothill outdistanced runner-up Diamond Bar at 205.
Mykkanen also won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.68.
The Texas-bound Koustik narrowly missed his goal of breaking 4:20 in the 500 freestyle but still won in a lifetime-best 4:20.98, ninth fastest in county history. But the senior returned with vengeance in the 100 breaststroke, winning in a lifetime-best and Division 2 record 54.88.
He slammed his hands on the pool deck after he saw his time.
“I was so happy,” Koustik said. “Not really getting what I wanted out of the 500 really got me mad, so I slammed that wall really hard. That’s kind of redeeming myself.”
Crean Lutheran’s Elise Garcia captured the 50 (22.71) and 100 butterfly (52.92) while Foothilll sophomore Samantha Pearson claimed the 200 free (1:46.27) for her first section title. Garcia’s teammate Mandy Brenner touched second in the 50 at 23.37.
DeLong’s Foothill girls finished third. They sparked an exciting meet by rallying to tie Redlands East Valley for the title in the medley relay.
The Knights trailed REV by just over half-a-second entering the final leg but Air Force-bound Sidney Shimomura split a 23.61 anchor to bring Foothill to the wall in a school-record 1:45.17. The relay also featured Pearson, Gabriella Valenti and Cameron Mykkanen.
