Doha: Texas A&M University at Qatar, a Qatar Foundation partner university, will restart its Al Maerifa Public Seminar Series designed to share expertise and knowledge with local community in Qatar today with a discussion of the university’s response to COVID-19.
When the global COVID-19 pandemic began, Texas A&M at Qatar funded seven research projects to help Qatar combat the outbreak of the virus. During the seminar, Dr. Hassan S Bazzi, Associate Dean for Research and Advancement, will present the COVID-19 activities undertaken by Texas A&M at Qatar in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Qatar Foundation, Barzan Holdings and Qatar Red Crescent Society, followed by faculty members who will present their research work and discuss project outcomes.
Presenting their work will be, Dr. Hussein Alnuweiri, Electrical and Computer Engineering on “Code Design and Modeling to Improve Testing”, Dr. Bing Guo, Mechanical Engineering on “Establishing Aerosol Virus Monitoring Capability in Qatar for Mitigation of COVID-19 and Future Epidemics”, Dr. Marwan Khraisheh, Mechanical Engineering on “3D Printing of Critical Need Medical Parts and Devices”, Dr. Othmane Bouhali, Science (physics) on “Investigation of the Feasibility of Large-Scale Sterilization of Medical, Industrial and Food Using Electron Beam Technologies”, Dr. Konstantinos Kakosimos, Chemical Engineering on “Tailored Prevention of Coronavirus”, Dr. Luc Véchot, Chemical Engineering on “Investigation of the Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Control of the Process Safety Risk in Major Hazards Industries in Qatar: Data Collection, Analysis and Recommendations” and Dr. Sara Hillman, Liberal Arts on “Labouring to communicate: Use of migrant languages in COVID-19 awareness campaign in Qatar”.
The Al Maerifa virtual seminar series features 45-minute seminars to promote knowledge on topics centred around Qatar’s grand challenges and research pursuits. The talks are presented in English and are designed for a general, nontechnical audience. Participants will be invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation.
Organised by Texas A&M at Qatar’s Office of Engagement, the Al Maerifa Public Seminar Series continues the partner university’s core mission of sharing knowledge with the local community in Qatar and showcases the breadth of the university’s expertise, said Dr. César Octavio Malavé, dean of Texas A&M at Qatar.

The second seminar of the fall Al Maerifa Public Seminar Series is set for September 17.
