Pig, Chickens Available At Santa Cruz Animal Shelters

Are you looking for a unique pet rather than a dog or cat? You'll find it here.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA -- Are you looking for a unique pet rather than a dog or cat? You'll find it at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. The local animal shelter is currently looking for homes for several chickens and a pig.

One chicken is named Amethyst, an unaltered female that's red and white. Her age isn't known but she's been at the shelter since Dec. 8.

Experts say caring for chickens can be fairly simple. It includes letting the chickens out of their coops in the morning and ensuring they get enough sun a day. You'll also have to clean their coops daily.

If you're in the market for a pig, there's Lydia. This adorable pig is grey and black and has been with the shelter since October. Shelter staff believe she is about six years old.

Pigs are just like other pets -- they need attention and a lot of room to explore and play. You can even train a pig to live indoor.
