A group of poets from Colombia, Cuba, Spain and the United States will take part in the University of La Verne California Poetry Festival this month.
The two-day festival will begin Monday, Oct. 8 with a poetry reading followed by comments from poets at the dA Center for the Arts.
The poetry reading will be in Spanish, but the poetry will be translated into English and the text projected onto a screen for the public. Participating in the reading will be Federico Diaz Granados of Colombia, Axel Presas of Cuba and Fernando Valverde of Spain. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Oct. 9, the festival program will move to the University of La Verne campus, where a roundtable discussion on poetry translation will be held at the university’s Hanawalt House. Those expected to take part in the discussion are Allen Josephs and Gordon McNeer of the United States and Fernando Opere and Nieves Garcia Pardos of Spain.
The same evening, University of La Verne alumna Guadalupe Robles will present her translation of the book, “Persistencia de los tatuajes” by Gabriel Chavez. The translation is being released this month by Valparaiso USA. The program will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Both nights are free to the public.
The dA Center for the Arts is at 252 S. Main St., Suite D in Pomona. Hanawalt House is at 2058 Second St. in La Verne.
