Hawks net 13 treys in opener

FALMOUTH, Maine — Senior guard Natalie Herbold knocked down four of her team’s 13 made 3-pointers, helping the Marshwood High School girls cruise to a 59-42 win at Falmouth in Friday night’s Class A South opener.

Herbold finished with 17 points and six steals to lead the way. Senior forward Alicia Richards added nine points — on three treys — and five rebounds. Nathalie Clavette, another of the Hawks’ 13 seniors, chipped in eight points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Marshwood opened the game with a 12-2 run and pulled away behind a 19-point third quarter. It will host Biddeford this Tuesday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Oyster River 49, Sanborn 48

KINGSTON — Freshman Natalie Simonds had a fine varsity debut — netting 14 points to lift the Bobcats in their Division II opener.

Madeline Alphonse and Abby Craig chipped in eight points apiece. Craig added 12 rebounds.

OR shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to help eke out this win. The Bobcats will travel to face Coe-Brown on Tuesday.

Coe-Brown 37, Pembroke 19

NORTHWOOD — The Bears jumped out to a 16-2 first-half lead en route to a convincing win in their Division II opener.

Angelina Rene led a balanced attack with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Natalie Harris added eight points and three steals. Valentina White chipped in with seven points and four assists. Lauren Curtin totaled five points and four rebounds.

Coe-Brown hosts Oyster River Tuesday.

Farmington 41, Sunapee 37

SUNAPEE — The Tigers grinded out a tough one on the road to improve to 2-0 in Division IV.

Farmington led 6-5 after the first quarter, 18-16 at the half and 30-27 after three.

Katie Martineau led the way with 16 points, while Chloe Weeks added 11 and Tatyana Long tossed in eight.

The Tigers visit Newmarket on Monday.

Noble 52, Westbrook 23

WESTBROOK, Maine — The Knights opened the Class AA South season with a win on the road.

They host Thornton on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Somersworth 48, Berlin 40

BERLIN — The defending D-III champs got started on the right foot with a key win on the road.

Evan Gray led the way with 18 points, while Jacob Hamilton added 13.

The Hilltoppers host St. Thomas on Tuesday.

St. Thomas 60, Inter-Lakes 42

MEREDITH — Andrew Cavanaugh scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Saints to a win in their D-III opener on the road.

STA led 33-20 at the half. Shawn DeKorne added 12 points, while Nick Bryant played great defense on Laker star Eli Swanson, making him work for his 14 points.

The Saints visit Somersworth Tuesday.

Portland 80, Noble 48

NORTH BERWICK, Maine — The Knights lost their Class AA South opener to Portland.

Tyler Oliver led Noble with 13 points, while Kyle Kennedy added 11 and Garrett Brown tossed in nine.

The Knights visit Gorham Tuesday.

York 68, Yarmouth 39

YARMOUTH, Maine — Brady Cummins led a balanced York attack with 14 points in Friday night’s season opener.

The Class A Wildcats led the Class B Clippers 36-22 at the half.

Will MacDonald had 11 points and Riley Linn added 10 for York, which will host Grey-New Gloucester on Tuesday night.

Sunapee 68, Farmington 38

SUNAPEE — The Tigers dropped their D-IV opener on the road.

Marcus Berko led Farmington with 13 points, while Isaiah Williams added 10.

The Tigers host Newmarket on Tuesday.

Epping 60, Groveton 46

EPPING — Hunter Bullock posted a triple double —18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists — to help the Blue Devils ace their Division IV season opener.

Peyton Rivers and Shawn Hill added 14 points apiece for Epping, which will travel to Nute on Monday.
