A bus carrying 30 adults and students in South Carolina crashed on Interstate 95, injuring 17 people, WCIV reports.
Chief Barry McRoy told WCIV, an ABC affiliate in Charleston, S.C., the crash happened around 1:10 a.m. on I-95 near MM 68. When it crashed, the bus was traveling in the northbound lanes and ran off the left side of the road into the median. The bus broke through a cable retaining carrier, crossed into the southbound lanes, drove down an embankment and into the woods on the other side of I-95, according to Chief McRoy.
Of the 30 people inside, 11 were taken to the hospital, two with serious injuries. Six students were referred for treatment when they arrived to the hospital later, according to WCIV.
The students on the bus were apart of a chorus group from Wilson, North Carolina. According to posts on Facebook, the group was traveling back home after a visit to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
The chorus group’s Facebook page says in a post that a trucker stopped to help the group after witnessing the wreck, and handed out paper towels to those who were injured.
“A HUGE thank you to Colleton County Fire Rescue and to the team at Colleton Medical Center for taking such good care of us,” Beddingfield Chorus wrote on its Facebook page.
The group says another bus was called to carry home the uninjured students.
