Celtic netted their Premiership rivals £370,000 each after they qualified for the group stage of the Champions League.

But many Hotline callers wouldn’t give tuppence for the performances of the Scottish champions at the sharpest end of European competition.

Admittedly, much of the criticism of Brendan Rodgers is coming from fans of other Scottish clubs, lining up to tell the Hoops boss he must now know how they feel.

Lesley Ellis, Whitburn: “Celtic are moaning the difference is their European rivals have so much more money. It’s just like Celtic in the Premiership.

Celtic were outclassed by Bayern

“They outspend every team every year and have better players so they can win every week. Do you hear all the rest of the managers in Scotland complaining?”

Ben Bruce, via email: “It’s Brendan and the Celtic support who need a reality check after blaming the millions available to Bayern. Where is the £30million a year since 2010 that Celtic have earned from qualifying for European football, ticket and merchandise sales? Celtic fans should blame their board - the biscuit tin comes to mind.”

Mark Lester, Dingwall: “So Celtic lost to Bayern because the Germans have a far superior budget? Funny, when Celtic hammer Motherwell and Ross County that’s down to Rodgers being a great manager and his players being brilliant. There’s never a mention of the money gulf then.”

Dave Clark, Cambuslang: “Once again our great team is being embarrassed on the field as we show just how inept we are playing against superstars. We are also paying the price for not investing in a central defender in the summer. We badly need one when we continue our European campaign after December in the Europa League or we run the risk of being found out over two legs.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at full time

Alfie Mullin, Glasgow: “Brendan Rodgers must be happy for his team to lose in European matches. He said he wants them to play the Celtic way, even if that means they lose. The thing is, losing in European matches usually is the Celtic way.”

Bill Day, Dundee: “I understand there are financial differences between the super clubs of Europe and Celtic coffers. However, Rodgers must give some of the young defenders a starting place as the board seem reluctant to spend any money on shoring up a defence crying out for talent.”

George Wilson, West Sussex: “Hopefully Aberdeen or Rangers can win the league and make a better shot of the Champions League than Celtic have for six years. It was embarrassing watching their supporters singing and dancing half way through the second half when they were being totally annihilated again.”

A dejected Scott Sinclair looks on

Andrew Lamb , Fraserburgh writes: “Once again, we can see why Patrick Roberts has chosen the SPFL two seasons on the trot. He simply is not good enough for the Premiership.”

John Allardyce, Edinburgh: “Here we go again. Rodgers is the master of the trash talk and says his team will learn from Bayern and be better for it. He said the exact same after maulings against Barca and PSG. Get real - these teams are on a level Celtic will never reach.”

Jim McAllister, Airdrie: “Rodgers has got his team playing the Celtic way all right - another trouncing in Europe. I’m enjoying watching it.”

However, several Celtic fans are still seeing the bigger picture, reflected after their recent 3-0 victory against Anderlecht in Brussels.

Craig Gordon, Ayr: “Celtic were well beaten but can still win the return. Anyway I've said before getting third spot and and collecting £30m to cement our run to 10-in-a-row is all that matters to our support.”

Brian Mitchell, Glasgow: “What a breath of fresh air listening to the Bayern management and players giving Celtic so much respect pre-match, knowing fine well the massive void between the teams. It was pure class, unlike the prima donnas at PSG.”

Terry Tierney, Saltcoats: “Can I point out Celtic have three points so far - more than Benfica, Olympiakos and Atletico Madrid, among others?”
