Villeneuve-les-Beziers to Port Cassafieres

We were moored through town so I took advantage of this and dashed into the village boulangerie early to buy a big baguette and some croissants to have with apricot jam for breakfast.

As we were very low on our battery and water, we decided to leave Villeneuve-les-Beziers and go straight through the village of Portiragnes on to the le Boat base at Port Cassafieres, where we could plug into power and fill up the water tank.

Along the way, we saw the VNF (French waterway body) staff mowing the banks of the canal with a big digger that has a mower on the end. Overall, apart from a few bottles and bags, the canals have been very clean. Several times we saw VNF vans and staff throwing anchors in the canal to catch fallen tree branches and pull them out so that boats don’t hit them or have their propellers damaged. There is also a lot of work along the banks marking diseased plane trees, cutting them down, digging out the roots and then burning them. Major replanting is being done in many of these sections.

Our last section of the trip was very scenic, with beautiful plane trees again and yet more vineyards. However, it has been noticeably drier as we have neared the Mediterranean – which is only a short distance further along the canal from here.

We arrived around midday and as we are here a day and a half early (with the boat not due back until Friday morning), we moored at the far end of the marina to give us some privacy.

As it was sunny and 23 degrees, the afternoon was spent lounging in our cabins or on the sundeck on the top of the boat. I also managed to wolf down a chocolate croissant for afternoon tea. ;-)
