Guyana Police Force (GPF) won the inaugural Corona Beer Invitational Football tournament, arresting Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 4-0 on Sunday in a lopsided final.
The Bourda boys ran into a roadblock named Dwain Jacobs at the GFC ground, who tallied a first half hat-trick to reduce the much hyped showdown into an exhibition affair.
Due to the result, GPF seized $1,000,000 and the winner’s trophy while the losing finalist pocketed $400,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Unlike the earlier group clash which ended 3-0 in favour of GFC, the arrest warrant commenced in the eighth minute in front of a large viewership, as Jacobs unleashed a powerful shot from the top of the box into the right side of the net.
Jacobs detained the home side once more in the 42nd minute, tipping his effort over the onrushing goalkeeper, after a lobbed pass from the right side fell into his onrushing path.
On the other side, GFC’S much vaunted offensive line was made to look like spectators throughout the contest due to the physicality employed by the rearguard of the lawmen.
Benjamin Opara, GFC’S main threat throughout the event, recorded their only noteworthy moment in the 27th minute but his effort was denied by the advancing goalkeeper while he fought off the challenge of his marker, inside the right of the area.
Jacobs’ third goal came with his final shot of the night, uncorking a thunderous strike from 22 yards outside the right of box, which settled into the lower left corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The Police brutality concluded in the 48th minute, with Kester Dundas the guilty rank as he directed a powerful header into the right corner, after collecting a left side cross inside the centre of the box.
Meanwhile, Western Tigers downed Northern Rangers 2-0 in the third place playoff. Darren Benjamin and Jamal Pedro were on target in the 35th and 90th+1 minute respectively.
With the win, the West Ruimveldt unit walked away with $200,000 and the third place accolade. On the other hand, the loser received $100,000 and the respective trophy.
