Its perimeter is nearly a mile, and inside is 2.1 million square feet of space for Amazon's first fulfillment center in Oregon.

The fulfillment center is just off Marine Drive, and it's part of Amazon's strategic plan to get more of these centers near its customer base.

"The progress is fantastic and we're looking forward to the hiring to start in the summer," said Amazon's Regional Director of Operations Melissa Nick.

There are four floors with each averaging 12 football fields worth of space. Three break rooms will give the 1,500 employees a respite before they go back to packaging up orders.

Downtown Troutdale, along W Historic Columbia Highway, is just a couple miles from the Amazon operation. Businesses there, like the Troutdale General Store, say they're already seeing an increase in business due to Amazon employees and construction workers coming through.

"A few would show up and get coffee and say, 'We're over working on the new Amazon, do you guys cater lunches?'" said Troutdale General Store owner Terry Smoke. "It's all good, the more people the better. I mean Troutdale for so long was a sleepy little town with nobody here."
