FDNY: Thousands lose power on Staten Island after Con Edison power plant fire

Con Ed plant fire leaves thousand without power

Thousands of Staten Islanders were left without power after a Con Edison power plant fire in Tompkinsville Saturday night.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A huge fire at a Tompkinsville power plant left thousands of Con Edison customers on Staten Island without power Saturday evening, according to spokesmen for the utility and the FDNY.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., firefighters were called to a blaze at a Con Edison power plant at 2 Murray Hulbert Ave., said an FDNY spokesman.

Twelve units and more than 60 firefighters responded to the “all-hands” fire, which began outside the commercial building.

The fire was placed under control as of 7:55 p.m., according to the spokesman, but hundreds of Con Edison customers in the borough are still in the dark.

According to a Con Edison spokesman, more than 2,400 customers were left without power on Staten Island due to “equipment failure" as of 8:49 p.m.

“The outage is due to downed wires. Crews are on location,” read a tweet from Borough President James Oddo’s office.

The outage coincides with one of the hottest days of the year. Saturday’s heat wave saw New York City temperatures soar into the upper 90s -- with a heat index over 100 degrees.

As of 9:35 p.m., 867 customers were still without power across the North Shore, according to the Con Edison outage map.
