The upcoming Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One title from Insomniac Games' new North Carolina-based division is designed with a cooperative experience in mind, but for those that aren't so keen on going through the campaign with three other buddies, the studio has now released some details on how it's going to work in a pure single-player mode.

Ratchet & Clank games up until now have only had single-player campaigns, even if they've almost always portrayed the adventures of the two main characters. Now, with the upcoming All 4 One, Insomniac Games is now delivering an experience with cooperative gameplay in mind.

We've seen plenty of videos and details about the regular four-player co-op mode in the new title, but now the studio is focusing on the regular single-player mode, where gamers are going to be helped by a second, AI-controlled companion.

"Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is built from the ground-up to be a co-op game, and many of the mechanics are very co-op based. So quickly realized we needed to give you a computer-controller partner to keep the gameplay balanced. In that regard, if you play All 4 One alone as Ratchet, Qwark or Nefarious, you’ll be teamed up with an AI bot playing as Clank."

"As you traverse the levels, Clank will ride on your back, just like always. When you reach enemies or a section that requires teamwork, Clank will jump off your back and help you out. What if you play as Clank? We’ve got a special surprise in store for you."

As you will see in the video below, players will be helped by the AI-controlled companion with special jumps and puzzles encountered in the story, but combat can always be a single-player affair, if you don't want the AI to help you and nab its fair share of bolts from defeat enemies.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is out on October 18, exclusively for the PlayStation 3 console. Until then, check out the single-player video below.
