LAWRENCE — Labor and Delivery nurse Linda Aubin, of Salem, N.H., and Pinkerton junior ROTC program Director Colonel Howell Steadman, of Hampstead, were among a handful of winners of the Merrimack Valley Credit Union's 'Biggest Heart Award's on Thursday.

“(Merrimack Valley Credit Union) has been committed to supporting its community for more than 60 years, and with the Biggest Heart Awards, we had the privilege of honoring the unsung heroes in our communities who go above and beyond every day without expecting anything in return,” said Peter Matthews, president and CEO of Merrimack Valley Credit Union. “We are celebrating their dedication by donating $500 to eight nonprofits selected by the winners. We hope these awards will inspire others to get involved in their communities.”

More than 100 people were nominated for the awards' eight categories. The winners earned the most of nearly 10,000 votes cast. Each winner received a $200 gift card and saw $500 donated to the nonprofit of his or her choice.

The credit union also donated $4,000 to local nonprofits on behalf of the winners and awarded the individuals a total of $1,600.

Salem-based limoncello maker releases canned Italian margarita

SALEM, N.H. — Local limoncello producer Fabrizia Spirits launched a canned version of their Italian margarita on March 30.

The premium, hand-crafted Italian Margarita, which is based on a family recipe, is made with award-winning Fabrizia Limoncello, freshly squeezed lemonade made with Sicilian lemons, and a premium tequila. It is the only all-natural Margarita available in retail locations in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Virginia.

The company came up with the margarita as a way of utilizing lemons wasted during the limoncello-making process. By 2014, Salem, NH-based Fabrizia Spirits was discarding more than 140,000 zested lemons each year.

“Thanks to the Sicilian lemons we already have on hand from our limoncello-making process and our commitment to using the highest-quality, all-natural ingredients, we are well-positioned to take advantage of national trends toward ready-to-drink, ‘to-go’ cocktails," said Phil Mastroianni, co-owner and founder, Fabrizia Spirits.
