Younker bats .500, earns another First Team All-American honor

Penn State Mont Alto junior outfielder Jeremiah Younker, a Williamsport graduate, was named a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association First Team All-American for the second consecutive season.

Younker led the USCAA with a .500 batting average, collecting 46 hits in 92 at-bats. He had seven doubles, five triples, two home runs, 35 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He was 10-for-11 in stolen-base attempts.

Younker also earned All-Penn State University Athletic Conference honors for the third straight season.

• PREP SOFTBALL

North Hagerstown 9, Thomas Johnson 1 (susp.)

FREDERICK, Md. — North Hagerstown scored in each of the first three innings, including a six-run second inning, to take a 9-1 lead over Thomas Johnson before play was suspended in the top of the fifth in a 3A West Section II semifinal on Monday.

Maggie Stiffler had three hits and drove in three runs and Sienna Starkey had two hits and an RBI for the Hubs.

Play is scheduled to resume Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will take on Linganore in the section final on Wednesday. Linganore defeated Frederick 17-0 in the other semifinal Monday.

Catoctin 12, Boonsboro 2

THURMONT, Md. — Karly Payne homered in the first inning and Rachel Roupe homered in the third for Boonsboro in its six-inning 1A West Section II semifinal loss to Catoctin on Monday.

The home run by Payne, a junior, was the 100th hit of her career for the Warriors.

Madison Griffith and Mikayla Miller each added a hit for Boonsboro (13-7).

Damascus 6, Williamsport 1

DAMASCUS, Md. — Isabella Itnyre hit a double for Williamsport in a 2A West Section II semifinal loss to Damascus on Monday.

Gillian Thomas and Araina Wigfall each added a hit for the Wildcats (10-11).

Red Land 6, Waynesboro 1

DILLSBURG, Pa. — The Indians fell to Red Land in the Mid-Penn Conference semifinals Monday night.

No further information was available.

In Tuesday’s final, Red Land will face Lower Dauphin, a 5-3 winner over Northern York in the other semifinal.

Konopka, Sturgill earn all-region honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka and junior pitcher/utility player Lori Sturgill of Shepherd University were named to the D2CCA NCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region second team.

Konopka batted .344 (65-for-189) with nine doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs, 29 runs and 16 stolen bases.

Sturgill batted .345 (51-for-148) with six doubles, three triples, 16 RBIs, 21 runs and 11 stolen bases. In the circle, she went 14-9 with a 1.81 ERA with 95 strikeouts and 50 walks in 139 innings for the Rams (34-20).

• ACADEMIC HONORS

Greencastle athletes earn recognition

Greencastle-Antrim’s Hannah Beeler (softball), Clare Hudak (girls track and field), Cade McDowell (baseball) and Spencer Swam (boys track and field) were honored for having the highest GPAs on their varsity teams during the spring season.

The spring varsity team with the highest GPA was softball (3.687).

Junior Hubs registration/combine

The Junior Hubs will hold two registrations and a free combine for football and cheer for children in grades K-8.

Registration will be held May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church at 17904 Binkley Ave. in Maugansville. The final registration and free football combine will be held June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hagerstown Regional Airport Front Lawn (Junior Hubs practice area). The combine is open to any Washington County youth.

The Junior Hubs are a feeder program for North Hagerstown High School and are part of the Keystone Youth Football & Cheerleading League. Practices begin July 30 and league games begin the weekend of Aug. 25-26. Home games will be held at North High.
