(CPV) - 2016 is the third year in which the Nelson Mandela International Day is organised and celebrated in the absence of the great iconic leader, who demonstrated through perseverance and principle, that each and every one of us has the ability to change the world through self-sacrifice and action.

This is also the reason for us to make efforts to carry out humanitarian activities successfully so that we can continue to fulfill one of his commitments to empower disadvantaged fellow human beings and to make the world a better place.

The declaration of July 18th as Nelson Mandela International Day by the UN General Assembly in 2009, in a true sense, reaffirms our faith in the values of freedom, equality, respect, peace and reconciliation, which Nelson Mandela cherished throughout his life.

The Day is celebrated every year in recognition of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent serving humanity and fighting for freedom and justice.

It is a call to inspire communities, organisations and individuals to change the conditions around them for the better and to render services to disadvantaged individuals and communities for at least 67 minutes.

Not only a recognition of his contribution to peace and freedom, it is also a message to the world that it is the truth alone that will ultimately prevail and triumph.

In this spirit, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Vietnam organises charity activities annually to celebrate the Nelson Mandela International Day in conjunction with many other organisations and individuals to join hands in raising funds to support the community.

This year, all contributions and donations VND115 million raised in July 15th by all donors will benefit the patients of Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital (at No.37 Hai Ba Trung street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi) including about 150 children suffering from cleft lips, who will be at the hospital for treatment and surgery during this month.

Though there are a number of challenges, facilities remain limited, the doctors and staff at the Hospital have been dedicated in working hard to assist the disadvantaged and needy patients./.
