2016 marks the fourth anniversary of Channel Orange, and with that realization re-sparks the frequented thought: When in this lifetime will we hear what’s next from Frank Ocean?

While the definite answer is still up in the air, producer Malay (James Ho) spoke with Pitchfork on the latest updates of Ocean’s long-awaited follow-up album. Malay, who worked on 13 out of the 17 tracks on Channel Orange, has returned to the studio for the new LP, and although there’s pressure to top the insurmountable bar set from Ocean’s highly acclaimed debut, the recording process has been surprisingly relaxed.

“A lot of the stuff on this new album was done with a handheld mic sitting in the control room. Frank’s exploring different vibes completely on this album. I wouldn’t say it’s vocally looser but just his mentality; it doesn’t seem as meticulous at certain times.”

Of course, the burning question came soon: when can fans expect to hear the second record? As you might expect, Malay wasn’t so keen on giving a direct answer: “I always tell people: When he’s ready, the world is gonna get it. It could be tomorrow… well not tomorrow but maybe a month. We’ve all been working hard. He’s been working super hard. I feel like he’s working harder than he’s ever worked in his life. I’m excited for everyone to hear it. I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, for sure.”

A release date would be ideal, but we’ve already survived this long a wait without that knowledge. Nonetheless, we have a fare hint of something arising in “maybe a month”.
