We have our first upset.
In the largest "REALLY?!" moment of the eliminations so far, Malaya Watson, 16, was sent home on "American Idol" tonight, leaving the judges shaking their heads and surely wishing they still had a save.
The soulful, teen powerhouse took a bit of a misstep Wednesday night with a slightly squeaky version of "Through the Fire" by Chaka Khan, and apparently, voter nation had enough.
Coming in as a quirky, brace-faced tuba player from Michigan, Malaya wowed the judges in her Detroit audition, belting out some Aretha Franklin like a true diva.
She continued the better-beyond-her-years trend through the live shows, only stalling once or twice, memorably on Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby."
Most of her performances were very strong, and showed off her natural talent.
But apparently, after being in the bottom three last week, Malaya just wasn't getting the votes.
She'll be remembered best for her soaring renditions of Tamela Mann's "Take Me To The King" and "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars.
This is in no way the end of the road for Malaya, who has many years to grow into whichever artist she wants to be, whether it's soul, R&B or gospel.
BOTTOM TWO
• CJ Harris
• Malaya Watson (lowest vote-getter)
NOTES
• This was a tough cut. Malaya did not deserve to go home for at least two or three more weeks. Tonight shows that every week can absolutely be the last performance for any of the "Idol" hopefuls.
• CJ and Sam Woolf should be thanking their lucky stars that they get to sing for another week this was wacky.
But this is just my rambling. What did you think? Comment below.
