Oscar-nominated writer and director Philip Kaufman will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for Directing at the 22nd edition of Camerimage next month.
The festival, based in Bydgoszcz, Poland, is one of the few in the world dedicated solely to the art of cinematography.
The award recognizes exceptional filmmakers who have changed the way movies are made with their creativity, visual skills and passion for their craft.
Camerimage, which has given the award to such famed names as David Lynch and John Searle (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli), celebrates exceptional skills in areas that include framing, mastery in handling light and working within the limitations of a location or studio. Cooperating with others, a key aspect of filmmaking, is also recognized.
Chicago-born Kaufman has distinguished himself as a writer and director in films such as his 1988 adaptation of Czech writer Milan Kundera‘s The Unbearable Lightness of Being, for which he received two Oscar nominations and, more recently, Quills. He was one of the writers on Raiders of the Lost Ark, the 1981 adventure movie starring Harrison Ford.
The festival said Kaufman had been chosen for the award for, among other reasons, his ability to work with “genre features with deeper analyses of the human condition.”
Kaufman has worked with actors that include Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, Lena Olin, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Samuel L. Jackson, Ashley Judd and Andy Garcia.
Announced earlier, five-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (The Right Stuff, The Patriot, The Passion of the Christ) will receive the festival’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Camerimage, the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography, runs Nov. 15-22.
