Hide Your Wallet

August 2021 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments. Let’s nerd out about language, especially when it comes to cults and brainwashing.

  • You’ll Be Fine

You’ll Be Fine by Jen Michalski

    Author: Jen Michalski
Released: August 2, 2021 by NineStar Press
    Genre: , ,

After Alex’s mother dies of an accidental overdose, Alex takes leave from her job as a writer for a lifestyle magazine to return home to Maryland and join her brother Owen, a study in failure to launch, in sorting out their mother’s whimsical, often self-destructive, life.

While home, Alex plans to profile Juliette Sprigg, an Eastern Shore restaurant owner and celebrity chef in the making who Alex secretly dated in high school. And when Alex enlists the help of Carolyn, the editor of the local newspaper, in finding a photographer for the article’s photo shoot, Alex struggles with the deepening, tender relationship that blossoms between them as well.

To complicate matters, Alex and Owen’s “Aunt” Johanna, who has transitioned to a woman, offers to come from Seattle to help with arrangements, and all hell breaks loose when she announces she is actually Alex and Owen’s long-estranged father. Can Alex accept her mother and father for who they are, rather than who she hoped they would be? And can Alex apply the same philosophy to herself?

Sneezy: Lesbians!!! The resilience of striving for happiness even when bad things happen! The courage to move forward instead of letting yourself be stuck on repeat!!! Learning empathy and compassion to accept your loved ones for who they are instead of an idea of them! Doing the same to yourself! And my heart goes SQUEEE!

  • A Lesson in Vengeance

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee

    Author: Victoria Lee
Released: August 3, 2021 by Delacorte Press
    Genre: , , ,

For fans of Wilder Girls and Ninth House, comes a dark, twisty, atmospheric thriller about a boarding school haunted by its history of witchcraft and two girls dangerously close to digging up the past.

Witchcraft is woven into the Dalloway School’s history. The school doesn’t talk about it, but the students do. And most memorable of all is the Dalloway Five–five students who all died mysteriously one after another, who some say were witches.

Before her girlfriend’s tragic death, Felicity Morrow was drawn to the dark. But after a year away from Dalloway’s ivy-covered campus, she’s determined to leave all that behind her, focus on her senior thesis, and graduate. Only it’s hard when Dalloway’s occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won’t let her forget.

It’s Ellis Haley’s first year at Dalloway, and she’s already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can’t shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity for help researching the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can’t say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource. And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway–and in herself.

Aarya: This might be a TOO scary for my taste, but the blurb looks good enough that I’m willing to risk a week’s worth of uninterrupted sleep.

  • The Black Intellectual Tradition

The Black Intellectual Tradition by Derrick Aldridge

    Author: Derrick Aldridge
Released: August 3, 2021 by University of Illinois Press
    Genre:

Considering the development and ongoing influence of Black thought

From 1900 to the present, people of African descent living in the United States have drawn on homegrown and diasporic minds to create a Black intellectual tradition engaged with ideas on race, racial oppression, and the world. This volume presents essays on the diverse thought behind the fight for racial justice as developed by African American artists and intellectuals; performers and protest activists; institutions and organizations; and educators and religious leaders. By including both women’s and men’s perspectives from the U.S. and the Diaspora, the essays explore the full landscape of the Black intellectual tradition. Throughout, contributors engage with important ideas ranging from the consideration of gender within the tradition, to intellectual products generated outside the intelligentsia, to the ongoing relationship between thought and concrete effort in the quest for liberation. Expansive in scope and interdisciplinary in practice, The Black Intellectual Tradition delves into the ideas that animated a people’s striving for full participation in American life.

  • Fresh

    Fresh by Margot Wood

    Author: Margot Wood
Released: August 3, 2021 by Amulet Books
    Genre: , ,

A hilarious and vulnerable coming-of-age story about the thrilling new experience–and missteps–of a girl’s freshman year of college

Some students enter their freshman year of college knowing exactly what they want to do with their lives. Elliot McHugh is not one of those people. But picking a major is the last thing on Elliot’s mind when she’s too busy experiencing all that college has to offer–from dancing all night at off-campus parties, to testing her RA Rose’s patience, to making new friends, to having the best sex one can have on a twin-sized dorm room bed. But she may not be ready for the fallout when reality hits. When the sex she’s having isn’t that great. When finals creep up and smack her right in the face. Or when her roommate’s boyfriend turns out to be the biggest a-hole. Elliot may make epic mistakes, but if she’s honest with herself (and with you, dear reader), she may just find the person she wants to be. And maybe even fall in love in the process . . . Well, maybe.

Aarya: Is freshman-year-in-college technically new adult romance?? Or still YA? I’m so bad at categorizing books.

  • So We Meet Again

So We Meet Again by Suzanne Park

    Author: Suzanne Park
Released: August 3, 2021 by Avon
    Genre: ,

When up-and-coming investment banker Jess Kim is passed over for a promotion, laid off in a virtual meeting, and then overhears why (“she’s already being overpaid anyway for a woman” and “Asians are worker bees, not someone who can drum up new deals”) she delivers an “eff you guys” speech and storms out of the building. Not sure what’s next, she moves back home to Tennessee with her domineering Korean mom, who tries to set her up with her pastor’s son Daniel Choi, an M&A lawyer by day and a successful video game streamer by night. Turns out he’s swoony and smart, not the awkward preacher’s kid she remembers. With his help, Jess launches a Korean cooking YouTube channel focused on easy meal prep for busy professionals.

All is going well until her mom walks on the show mid-live recording and argues about cooking technique. While she hates being berated by her mother in front of the world, it actually works in their favor—they go viral!

Soon her cooking channel becomes an actual media company and brand. When a client is suddenly interested in buying Jess out, she finds herself sitting across the table from the very investment firm she quit not so long ago. But there’s just one other problem: Daniel, the guy whose been helping her and that she’s been falling for, is the firm’s new general counsel.

Sneezy: All kinds of messy feels and a childhood acquaintance to friends to enemies to lovers romance!!! What more can you ask for?

  • The Wingmaker

    The Wingmaker by Mette Jakobsen

    Author: Mette Jakobsen
Released: August 3, 2021 by Text Publishing
    Genre: ,

The crumbling marble angel is Vega’s most ambitious restoration project yet, but she thinks she can manage it, if she could just find somewhere to house the 500-kilo statue while she works. Her father, Vince, has the solution: the abandoned Seafarers’ Hotel, which sits alone at the end of a winding coastal road, offers both the space and quiet Vega craves.

The hotel also holds other surprises, however. The chandeliers are home to dive-bombing canaries, the ballroom occasionally hosts a troupe of tango-dancing farmers, and one of the bedrooms is occupied by an inept handyman who might be even more broken than Vega.

As Vega restores the fragile angel to its former glory, can she also find a way to pick up the pieces of her life and begin anew?

Sneezy: Art restoration! Competence porn! Tango! Gothic setting complete with dive bombing canaries! …wait, it’s not a haunted mansion, is it?

Lord of the Masquerade by Erica Ridley

    Author: Erica Ridley
Released: August 6, 2021 by WebMotion
    Genre: ,
    Series: Rogues to Riches #7

A fun, fast-paced interracial romance full of banter, scandal, and devastating secrets, from a New York Times bestselling author:

Entrepreneur Miss Unity Thorne helped two different men amass their fortunes—only to end up on the street. She’s scraping by at the theatre, but this isn’t the show she plans to star in. The next fortune Unity builds will be hers alone. Her masquerade-themed assembly rooms will rival the ton, but to do so, she’ll have to apprentice the most dangerous rake of all.

The arrogant, sexy-and-he-knows-it Duke of Lambley’s weekly masquerade parties are decadent odes to excess: unlimited food, drink, dancing, romantic gardens, and private pleasure rooms upstairs. Everyone loves his balls, and he likes it that way. He’ll take a wife someday, but it certainly won’t be the pretty termagant who challenges him in the ballroom and the bedroom…

In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses!

Shana: Fingers crossed that the hero is not an alphahole.

A sparkling debut from a new author we’re all going to want more from.”–Susan Meissner, bestselling author of The Nature of Fragile Things

When an ambitious female artist accepts an unexpected commission at a powerful earl’s country estate in 1920s England, she finds his war-torn family crumbling under the weight of long-kept secrets. From debut author Courtney Ellis comes a captivating novel about finding the courage to heal after the ravages of war.

Alberta Preston accepts the commission of a lifetime when she receives an invitation from the Earl of Wakeford to spend a summer painting at His Lordship’s country home, Castle Braemore. Bertie imagines her residence at the prodigious estate will finally enable her to embark on a professional career and prove her worth as an artist, regardless of her gender.

Upon her arrival, however, Bertie finds the opulent Braemore and its inhabitants diminished by the Great War. The earl has been living in isolation since returning from the trenches, locked away in his rooms and hiding battle scars behind a prosthetic mask. While his younger siblings eagerly welcome Bertie into their world, she soon sees chips in that world’s gilded facade. As she and the earl develop an unexpected bond, Bertie becomes deeply entangled in the pain and secrets she discovers hidden within Castle Braemore and the hearts of its residents.

Threaded with hope, love, and loss, At Summer’s End delivers a portrait of a noble family–and a world–changed forever by the war to end all wars.

The woman who never made a match of her own is making matches for everyone else in this hilarious comedy of manners from the author of Mr. Malcolm’s List.

Sophronia Lattimore had her romantic dreams destroyed years ago and is resigned to her role as chaperone for her cousin. Still, she cannot sit idly by when she becomes aware that a gentleman is about to propose to the wrong woman. She sends him an anonymous letter that is soon the talk of the town, particularly when her advice proves to be correct. Her identity is discovered and Sophie, formerly a wallflower, becomes sought after for her “expert” matchmaking skills.

One person who seeks her out is the eligible and attractive Sir Edmund Winslow. As Sophie assists Sir Edmund in his pursuit of a wife, she wishes she could recommend herself as his bride. However, she vows to remain professional and uninvolved while aiding him in his search (especially since the gentleman surely does not return her affections).

Three unexpected arrivals soon show up at Sophie’s door—the man who once broke her heart, a newlywed who is dissatisfied with the match Sophie made for her, and the man madly in love with Sophie’s cousin—all wanting her attention. But when her onetime beau and Sir Edmund both appear to be interested in her, Sophie can’t figure out if she’s headed for another broken heart or for the altar. How can she be expected to help other people sort out their romantic lives when her own is such a disaster?

    Role Model by Rachel Reid

    Author: Rachel Reid
Released: August 10, 2021 by Carina Press
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Game Changers #5

Troy Barrett has been freshly traded to Ottawa after calling out Dallas Kent during a team practice. He wants to be a better person, and the weird, scrappy energy of the struggling Ottawa team seems like the place to…well. It seems like the only place that will have Troy right now.

Fortunately the Ottawa team includes Ilya Rozanov and Wyatt Hayes, and also includes an adorable social media manager, Harris Drover. Harris is the opposite of Troy in every way: friendly, cheerful, chatty, and goofy with a booming voice, a startlingly loud laugh, and Pride pins all over his denim jacket. Definitely not the sort of person Troy would normally associate with, and yet…

Lara: I devoured this book and it MADE ME SO HAPPY.

  • When the Reckoning Comes

When the Reckoning Comes by LaTanya McQueen

    Author: LaTanya McQueen
Released: August 3, 2021 by Harper Perennial
    Genre: ,

A haunting novel about a black woman who returns to her hometown for a plantation wedding and the horror that ensues as she reconnects with the blood-soaked history of the land and the best friends she left behind.

More than a decade ago, Mira fled her small, segregated hometown in the south to forget. With every mile she traveled, she distanced herself from her past: from her best friend Celine, mocked by their town as the only white girl with black friends; from her old neighborhood; from the eerie Woodsman plantation rumored to be haunted by the spirits of slaves; from the terrifying memory of a ghost she saw that terrible day when a dare-gone-wrong almost got Jesse—the boy she secretly loved—arrested for murder.

But now Mira is back in Kipsen to attend Celine’s wedding at the plantation, which has been transformed into a lush vacation resort. Mira hopes to reconnect with her friends, and especially, Jesse, to finally tell him the truth about her feelings and the events of that devastating long-ago day.

But for all its fancy renovations, the Woodsman remains a monument to its oppressive racist history. The bar serves antebellum drinks, entertainments include horrifying reenactments, and the service staff is nearly all black. Yet the darkest elements of the plantation’s past have been carefully erased—rumors that slaves were tortured mercilessly and that ghosts roam the lands, seeking vengeance on the descendants of those who tormented them, which includes most of the wedding guests.

As the weekend unfolds, Mira, Jesse, and Celine are forced to acknowledge their history together, and to save themselves from what is to come.

Amanda: The horror genre is very full of white men and I love seeing new voices to the genre who definitely aren’t that.

  1. Gillian B says:

… my wallet hates you. And if these are enough to turn my TBR pile beside the bed into the Leaning-and-almost-falling Tower of Books, you know who I’m blaming.

And now, the long wait until they turn up.

  2. Qualisign says:

Sure wish they hadn’t used the quotation marks in the blurb: “Alex and Owen’s “Aunt” Johanna, who has transitioned to a woman…” Grrrrr. Otherwise it sounded great.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I haven’t heard of WHEN THE RECKONING COMES but I think the premise is absolutely fantastic. Every once in a while, I’ll be watching FOUR WEDDINGS and there will be a white couple marrying at a former plantation repurposed as a wedding venue (insert “WTF” emoji here) and, I’m sure not coincidentally, one of the other brides will be a POC and the eye-rolling is a joy to behold.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

As for me, not a lot on my August tbr, but August 10 is going to be a real red letter day!

Maisey Yates’s latest HP, BRIDE FOR THE LOST KING, releases August 1. This is the second book in her Heirs of Liri duet. I enjoyed the first book (HIS MAJESTY’S FORBIDDEN TEMPTATION) and look forward to the new book which involves a prince who was kidnapped as a child, now reappearing as a grown man and needing a fake fiancée to smooth his rough image.

August 10 is a banner day for my tbr with new books from three of my favorite writers in three of my favorite series (two of which were featured above):

Rachel Reid releases ROLE MODEL, the fifth book in her Game Changers m/m hockey series. This book is about a closeted player and the out-and-proud social media manager for the team to which he’s recently been traded. That sounds you hear is me squeeing!

    M. O’Keefe (that’s Molly O’Keefe’s “dark romance” pen name) releases UNTAMED, the third and final book in her Dark Hearts trilogy (which is itself part of the large multi-author Midnight Dynasty series). In UNTAMED, a young woman, newly married to an inscrutable man, returns to her hometown to uncover the truth about what happened to her late first husband.

Annika Martin’s JUST NOT THAT INTO BILLIONAIRES is the sixth book in her Billionaires in Manhattan series of rom-coms-with-serious-centers. This one is billed as “friends-to-enemies-to-lovers”—and, if you’re familiar with the series, it’s Francine & Benny’s story.

The publication date for Ella James’s WRATH was moved from July 28 to August 27. This is part of James’s Sinful Secrets series and is a dark m/m romance between stepbrothers.

And my girl Kati Wilde’s latest shifter romance, SHERIFF’S BAD BEAR, is scheduled for August 31. As usual with Kati’s publication dates, I follow the old Russian proverb, “Hope for the best, expect the worse.” BEAR is the follow-up to TEACHER’S PET WOLF (the heroes of the two books are shifters & brothers; the heroines are sisters). In BEAR, the heroine is a local sheriff, the hero has been crushing on her for a long time. Can’t wait…but I may have to (lol).

@Qualisign—I had the same thought and then thought maybe it was to indicate that she’s their dad, not their aunt? Either way, it’s a poor editorial choice.

  6. Carrie G says:

@Qualisign, When I read the “aunt” I thought it meant it was a person who was not an aunt by blood, but one of those “good friends we call aunt”, so that’s why the “aunt” in quotes. Or it could be in quotes because she’s actually their father, not their aunt. I hope one of those is correct, because otherwise it’s an insulting mistake. But, of course, there’s no way to know until someone reads the book!

  7. Qualisign says:

@Carrie G, you are much more generous than I am on this. Because the blurb — within the same sentence — made explicit that the “Aunt” had transitioned earlier and was [potentially] the father of two main characters, the “good friends we call aunt” would be the only possibly redeeming read. Good on you for seeing it as an option. I agree with @FashionablyEvil that it was a very poor editorial choice, but it’s one that borders on unforgivable to me.

August 5 Long Shadows by Jodi Taylor: Next Elizabeth Cage.

August 1 Scandal in Babylon by Barbara Hambly: A mystery set in world that’s almost identical to ‘Bride of the Rat God’, including pet Pekingeses, but no magic (?) Slightly weird, but I love Hambly. However, I don’t love her enough to spend 19 dollars on a kindle book, so I’m waiting on the library.

August 10: Gone for Good by Joanna Schaffhausen. Description sounds interesting. I have to check the sample “The Lovelorn Killer murdered seven women, ritually binding them and leaving them for dead before penning them gruesome love letters in the local papers. Then he disappeared, and after twenty years with no trace of him, many believe that he’s gone for good.

Not Grace Harper. A grocery store manager by day, at night Grace uses her snooping skills as part of an amateur sleuth group. She believes the Lovelorn Killer is still living in the same neighborhoods that he hunted in, and if she can figure out how he selected his victims, she will have the key to his identity.

Detective Annalisa Vega lost someone she loved to the killer. Now she’s at a murder scene with the worst kind of déjà vu: Grace Harper lies bound and dead on the floor, surrounded by clues to the biggest murder case that Chicago homicide never solved.”

  9. Layla says:

I read an ARC of Cheer Up and it is absolutely as adorable and wonderful as the cover suggests. It definitely doesn’t show away from transphobia and micro aggressions but it’s mainly a fluffy and light-hearted read and not very stressful at all!

  10. Nicole says:

How much of the book is the summary for So We Meet Again covering? That seems like at least half the book right there.

  11. Karin says:

I almost never read contemporaries, but I really enjoyed Annika Martin’s first book in this series, “Most Eligible Billionaire”.

  12. Maureen says:

I’m very excited for Role Model. I re-read the first four Game Changers last week, so I”m READY!

So We Meet Again sounds really good, I’m on the wait list through one of my libraries, can’t wait to read this one. I love when libraries let you essentially put holds on books that haven’t been released yet. Such a happy feeling when it turns up!

  13. Susan/DC says:

“Like a Love Song” is categorized as LGBTQIA, but it appears to have a female heroine and a male hero, so I’m confused.

  14. AR says:

@Carrie G, I’m pretty sure your interpretation of the You’ll Be Fine blurb is the correct one (and not just because I read it the same way). NineStar Press is an LGBTQA publisher. I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

  15. Layl says:

@Susan/DC, the hero in Like A Love Song is bisexual.

  16. JudyW says:

I too am wanting the Reid book but at less than 300 pages for $10 seems steepish. So I am on the fence about it. Maybe I’ll wait to see the grades on Goodreads a bit more since my TBR is already huge.

  17. Lisa F says:

You’ll be Fine, Fresh, I Kissed A Girl, If the Shoe Fits, Role Model, Mis Lattimore’s Letter, Just not that Into Billionaires, Cheer Up, It Takes Heart, The Wingmaker, So We Meet Again, and Like a Love Song are on the TBR this month.

“At Summer’s End” was just an okay one for me, with a lulu of an ending.

  18. Kareni says:

@Susan/DC, I’ve no additional knowledge of the book, but perhaps one of the lead characters is bi.

  19. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@JudyW: I also blanched when I saw that $9.99 price for ROLE MODEL—but I’m so invested in the series (and all the ARC readers are swooning over the story—so I expect the GR rating to be very high), I’m going to bite the bullet and pay full price for it. I know I’ll be doing a reread of the entire Game Changer series before Reid releases the final book, LONG GAME (in which Shane & Ilya get their HEA) in 2022, so I figure I might as well buy book five to add to books 1-4 that I already have. Incidentally, I do expect that $10 price point to remain a regular thing with popular authors and/or highly-anticipated books: Tessa Bailey’s IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER was $9.99 and Andie J. Christopher’s HOT UNDER HIS COLLAR was an astonishing $10.99!

  21. KitBee says:

YOURS CHEERFULLY by AJ Pearce comes out August 10 in the US. I really enjoyed DEAR MRS. BIRD (WW2 historical fiction with an emphasis on female friendship), so I’m very excited for this sequel! It’s not primarily a romance, but I suspect a romantic subplot.

Looks like A Lesson in Vengeance (you have a typo in the heading, by the way) must have been put back – says Feb next year for me.

  24. Vicki says:

Just finished A Lesson in Veangance and love it. Would recommend. It is creepy and sometimes a little scary. But, boarding school, witches who died centuries ago, magic, murder, wow! And the writing is good, too.

  25. batgirl says:

Am I the only one who snickered at Lord of the Masquerade? “Everyone loves his balls”?

  26. Kareni says:

    Good catch, @batgirl!

  27. I wasn’t crazy about Mr. Malcolm’s List but I’m up for trying the next book. Thanks for the tips and links!
