Pregnant mother struck, killed by car on Cape Cod
Tried to cross Route 28 on foot after leaving mall
A 32-year-old mother who was 7 1/2 months pregnant with her second child was struck and killed by a car last night in Hyannis, only a block from her house, according to Barnstable police.
Jennifer Joseph of Barnstable had apparently just left the Cape Cod Mall, where she was picking up medication, at about 6 p.m., said Barnstable police Sergeant Ben Baxter.
As she attempted to cross Route 28 on foot, a dark-colored station wagon traveling westbound struck her, Baxter said.
“It’s a sad situation,’’ he said. “She’s seven months pregnant, trying to go home to her 3-year-old daughter.’’
Baxter said an off-duty firefighter and an on-duty Barnstable police detective, who were traveling past the scene in the opposite direction, stopped to render first aid but were unsuccessful.
Joseph was pronounced dead shortly after she was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. The unborn baby was not saved, police said.
It is unclear whether the driver, a man about 50 years old whose identity was not released by police, will face charges, but police said that he was not under the influence and that speed was not a factor.
The accident is under investigation by the Barnstable Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
According to eyewitness accounts, Joseph appeared to walk into oncoming traffic without looking, Baxter said.
Joseph lived with her daughter, Aryana Reed, and her boyfriend, Jonathan Reed, 26.
Jonathan Reed, who is the father of Joseph’s daughter and would have been the father of the new baby, said he did not wish to comment last night.
