Monica Puig and Maria Sharapova will head to Puerto Rico next week to help relief efforts

Tennis star Monica Puig has been spearheading efforts to help her native Puerto Rico recover from the devastation after Hurricane Maria. Earlier this month, her peer Maria Sharapova pledged to help the cause by donating all of the profits from her candy line, "Sugarpova," through the end of the year.

Now the two tennis stars are doing even more as they will be heading to the island next week to help with relief efforts. Puig spoke to Insideout Magazine on Tuesday about what it will be like to go home for the first time since the storm, and what it means to have Sharapova's support.

Revealing she's "nervous" to see just how bad the destruction is, she called it a "bittersweet homecoming" but is determined to help those in need as much as she can.

"I will go with Maria on Monday -- to Puerto Rico, so we will both be helping out," she said. "I also really like the fact that she's contributing, especially after the warm welcome that Puerto Rico gave her. I know that they will welcome her back with open arms as well and we're just gonna try and do what we can to help the island."

Puig previously thanked Sharapova on her Instagram account for her efforts, but it's pretty touching to see two on-court rivals come together.

Words cannot describe how incredibly grateful I am for your kindness and your support @mariasharapova ... Almost a year ago I had the opportunity to share my beautiful Puerto Rico with you and now we have the opportunity to help bring hope and life back to this wonderful island. Thank you for all that you are doing to help. You truly are an example and an inspiration to many and I'm so thankful that you have my back and the backs of all the Puerto Ricans! 💙🇵🇷
