Police identify husband and wife in suspected murder-suicide

SMITHBURG, W.Va. — Two people are dead following an apparent murder-suicide Wednesday that began in Doddridge County and ended in Ritchie County, authorities said.

Lisa Barnard, 50, was found shot and killed at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at a residence near Smithburg in Doddridge County. Authorities said she suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Her husband Richard Barnard, 63, was pursued by police into Ritchie County where he then committed suicide, the Doddridge County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing.
