Todd Bowles says Jets' quarterback situation is 'an open slate,' won't commit to Geno Smith

As you might have heard, the Jets' quarterback situation isn't exactly stable.

For all the hopeful talk Wednesday at the introductory press conference for head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan, there is still that lingering little question: Who will be the Jets' Week 1 starter in 2015?

Stabilizing the Jets' quarterback position -- whether that means developing Geno Smith or bringing somebody else in -- should be priority No. 1 for Bowles and Maccagnan.

At this point, Bowles isn't ready to say if Smith is his guy. Bowles went on ESPN Radio on Thursday morning and told Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic essentially that. Right now, Bowles is just taking a wait-and-see approach with Smith, and where Smith stands on the depth chart. (This obviously could depend on if the Jets draft/sign/trade for a quarterback.)

"I've only seen very little of him," Bowles said of Smith. "He's got a lot of talent and a lot of promise. Remember, he's only played two years. We're going to get in and look at all the games (on film) and see what he does well. You've got to sit down and talk to him, and get a chance to see him live and in person before I make those kind of conclusions."

Golic asked Bowles if he views the quarterback position as "an open slate" at this point.

"I think it's an open slate right now," Bowles said. "It won't be fair to say he is or isn't the quarterback. Geno obviously is a heck of a football player, but there's things we've got to evaluate and judge as a whole team. It's not just Geno. It's everybody. He's the focus because he's the quarterback, but everybody is going to be judged the same way. It's an open slate on everybody coming in."
