An Atkinson man accused of shooting his son might have been angry because of food, according to court documents.Albert LaMonica, 71, is charged with domestic violence, reckless conduct and first-degree assault in connection with the shooting of his 45-year-old son. "This firearm was holstered on his belt when he reached for it," prosecutor Jill Cook said in court Monday.Police said that when they arrived at 13 Newbury Drive, both men came out with their hands up. Christopher LaMonica had a bloody wound on his right side near his stomach."It was not a flesh wound. I can't go into it any more than that," Cook said. "I just know that he was admitted into the hospital."Albert LaMonica said his son had recently moved in."My niece warned me not to let him because she knew he was trouble, but he's my son," he said. "I couldn't let him stay in the street."According to court paperwork, Albert LaMonica told police that the two were in the kitchen and arguing about food. The father told his son that he wanted him to move out, and Christopher LaMonica started yelling, according to his father.Albert LaMonica told police that he reached for his phone to call for help, but his son "slapped him in the face." A younger son stepped in to break things up, but Christopher LaMonica threw him across the room, his father told police.Police said Albert LaMonica told them that his son came toward him, and that's when he shot him. The man told police that his son is a kickboxer, and he was afraid for his life."It's just hard to believe, after 71 years, I'm in jail because of him," Albert LaMonica said. "I never had trouble with the police. I have a clean record."Prosecutors asked for $10,000 bail, but the judge set bail at $5,000."The police department also removed numerous amounts of firearms and knives and ammo from the house," Cook said.A probable cause hearing on the charges is scheduled for Sept. 1.
