DECATUR -- Ronald Andrew Blodgett, 89, of Decatur, IL passed away at 10:05 pm on Monday, January 22, 2018 in Fair Havens Christian Village.
Ron was born August 13, 1928 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of John and Leona (Baillon) Blodgett. He graduated from Decatur High and was a lifelong resident of Decatur. Ron proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Austria. He married his beloved wife of 34 years, Joanne J. Barnett, on May 3, 1953 at First Methodist Church in Decatur. Following several years working at A. E. Staley Mfg. Company, Ron began his career as a City of Decatur Firefighter on October 10, 1955. He was instrumental in developing the scuba diving program established by the fire department. Ron retired as Lieutenant on July 14, 1988 after 32 years. He also operated his own business, Blodgett Drapery Service, for many years. Following the death of his first wife, Joanne, he married his second wife, Dorothy “Jeannie” Riggs on December 30, 1991. Ron enjoyed many fitness and sports related activities, including boxing, karate, fencing, handball, racquetball, swimming, scuba diving, and bike riding. He loved animals and thoroughly enjoyed the company of his pets, including dogs, cats, and even a rescued raccoon.
Ron is survived by his daughter, Debbie Beilstein and husband Jon of St. Louis, MO; grandson Bradley Andrew Beilstein and wife Victoria Reyes of St. Louis, MO; great-granddaughter Alessandra (Aly) Beilstein of St Louis, MO, and a sibling due to arrive in June; brother-in-law Richard Barnett and wife Doris of Decatur, IL; nephew Bill (Kelli) Barnett of Decatur, IL; nieces Diana (Pete) McPheeters and Barbie Barnett both of Monticello, IL; and several great nieces and nephews. Ron had two very special friends, Bill (Joyce) Hawks and Al Fagin, who visited him regularly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Leona Blodgett; his ever-loving wife, Joanne; and his second wife, Jean.
Inurnment will be in the Star of Hope Mausoleum at Graceland Cemetery, Decatur. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Piatt County Animal Shelter, 301-A S. Charter St. Monticello, IL 61856.
