Worker dies after fall from movie theater roof
A heating/ventilation/air conditioning worker from Canton died Tuesday afternoon after falling 30 to 35 feet off the Blackstone Valley Cinema De Lux at the Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, The Enterprise reported. Police Wednesday morning identified the victim as John B. Folkes, 54, of Canton. Police said they received a 911 call at 12:22 p.m. reporting a man had fallen off the roof of the cinema building. When police and emergency personnel arrived, a co-worker was performing CPR on the victim, who was unresponsive. Police and emergency medical services personnel continued emergency medical treatment and took the man to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester. He was pronounced dead, police said. The victim worked for Medford-Wellington Service Co. in Medford, a contracted HVAC vendor. He was handling a large aluminum heat exchanger, approximately 4 feet square. He was alone on the roof when he fell, police said. Police estimated he fell 30 to 35 feet directly onto the ground. There were no witnesses or camera footage; police said it appeared to be an accident and said there was no indication of foul play. A local police detective, state police detectives and a representative of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated.
